About
Kalōpā State Recreation Area rents a group of duplex cabins on the Hamakua Coast of Hawaiʻi Island, separate from its tent campsites. Each unit sleeps up to 8 on bunk beds, with its own toilet and hot shower - but cooking is shared, not private: a central dining hall has a gas range, water heater, refrigerator, basic dishes and utensils, tables, chairs, and its own restrooms. Hawaii DLNR's own page doesn't state how many cabins make up this group. CLOSED until 12/31/2026 per the park's own page, on top of a separate, more recent notice that Hawaiʻi Island camping and lodging remains suspended indefinitely amid storm recovery - two overlapping closures that DLNR hasn't reconciled into one date. Hawaii state park status has been changing amid Hurricane Lala/Tropical Storm Moke recovery - check dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/important-park-notices/ for the current status before traveling.
Fees
$70/night per cabin for Hawaii residents, $100/night for non-residents. Online cabin reservations must be made at least 7 days before check-in, through Hawaii DLNR Division of State Parks' own explore.ehawaii.gov system - the same portal used for tent camping (migrated statewide from the legacy camping.ehawaii.gov system as of February 1, 2026; login required to book). Full payment is required at the time of reservation; cancelling less than 15 days before check-in gets no refund, and a $5 cancellation fee applies to refunds that are granted.
No heat source is mentioned for these cabins, and Kalōpā sits at over 2,100 feet elevation where Hawaiʻi Island nights can be genuinely cool. They're currently closed - check DLNR's live park-notices page before planning a trip.
