About
Four screened A-frame shelters at Hāpuna Beach State Recreation Area on Hawaiʻi Island's Kohala Coast, each with wooden sleeping platforms and a picnic table for up to 4 people. There's no kitchen or private bathroom - cold showers and restrooms are shared, and DLNR asks guests to bring their own soap and hand sanitizer. Everyone in your group must be present for a mandatory 3pm check-in with park staff. This park doesn't allow tent camping at all - these four shelters are the only overnight option here. Hāpuna's own DLNR page currently lists these shelters as CLOSED, with no reopening date given; this closure isn't mentioned on DLNR's actively-updated storm-recovery notices page, so it may be a longer-standing or unrelated issue rather than storm damage - call ahead to confirm before planning a trip.
Fees
$40/night for Hawaii residents, $70/night for non-residents. Online cabin reservations must be made at least 7 days before check-in, through Hawaii DLNR Division of State Parks' own explore.ehawaii.gov system - the same portal used for tent camping (migrated statewide from the legacy camping.ehawaii.gov system as of February 1, 2026; login required to book). Full payment is required at the time of reservation; cancelling less than 15 days before check-in gets no refund, and a $5 cancellation fee applies to refunds that are granted.
Hawaii doesn't have a winter closure season the way mainland shelters do; this one is closed for a separate, undated reason not tied to the current storm-recovery notices - call ahead or check DLNR's own park page before planning a trip.
