About each unit
Backcountry Rustic Cabins
This listing covers Porcupine Mountains' backcountry rustic cabins - several are individually named, including Crosscut, White Birch, Whitetail, Union River, and Gitche Gumee, but a separate location for each isn't published, so they're combined into this one listing rather than guessed at individually. Each cabin sleeps two to eight people and is equipped with bunk beds, mattresses, a wood-heating stove, a table and chairs, and cooking/eating utensils - there's no running water or electricity, and a vault toilet is nearby (bring your own toilet paper). Cabins on inland lakes come with a boat and personal flotation devices. All but two require a hike in from a designated trailhead, ranging from 100 yards to 9 miles; snowshoes or cross-country skis are needed mid-November through May. Drinking water should be boiled for one minute or filtered unless carried in - no hand pumps are available. As of this listing, the Whitetail cabin is closed due to a structure fire, until major repairs can be made.
Backcountry Wilderness Yurts
This listing covers Porcupine Mountains' backcountry wilderness yurts - several are individually named, including Union Bay East, Union Bay West, and Little Union River, but a separate location for each isn't published, so they're combined into this one listing rather than guessed at individually. Each yurt sleeps four and is equipped with bunk beds, mattresses, a wood-heating stove, a table and chairs, and cooking/eating utensils - there's no running water or electricity, and a vault toilet is nearby (bring your own toilet paper). The yurts require a hike in from a designated trailhead, ranging from 100 yards to 2.5 miles; snowshoes or cross-country skis are needed mid-November through May. All of these yurts except the Lost Creek yurt are pet-friendly.
Kaug Wudjoo Modern Lodge
Kaug Wudjoo Modern Lodge sits along the shores of Lake Superior near the campground entrance, among towering hemlocks. Built soon after the park was established in 1945, it originally served as the park manager's residence - its name, pronounced "kahg-WAD-jiw," means "place of the crouching porcupine" in Ojibwe. It's a modern lodge with several private bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and a private indoor bathroom with a shower. Bedding, dishes, a coffee maker, and cookware are often supplied, along with a private fire ring, picnic table, and on-site parking.
Union Bay Tiny Quill House · sleeps 6
The Tiny Quill House sits near Union Bay - unlike Porcupine Mountains' rustic backcountry cabins, it's a modern cabin with electrical service. No individually mapped location is published for this cabin; the point shown is the nearby Union Bay modern campground. This unit is one of two exceptions (with the Lost Creek yurt) to the park's otherwise pet-friendly backcountry lodging - pets aren't allowed here.
