Crags Trail to "The Crags"

Foot, horse and cross-country ski trail. This trail is a moderately difficult 2.5 mile trail with an elevation change of 800 feet.

Crags Trail leads to a group of rock pinnacle formations. It is used for cross country skiing and snow shoeing in the winter. No camping or campfires are allowed on either side of Forest Service Road 383, except in the Crags Developed Campground. Parking is allowed at designated trailheads only. Hazard trees still exist in the area from the spruce bark beetle infestation, so visitors should be aware of large standing dead trees and the potential for falling trees, especially in high winds. Visitors will continue to notice significant changes in the drainage over the next few years as more and more spruce trees succumb to the natural succession from the beetle infestation. Additional forest health projects, including timber removal, will necessitate future closures in the Crags area.

Restrictions Motorized vehicles are prohibited on the trail.

The first 1/2 mile of the Devil's Playground Trail is shared with the Crags Trail. At the Y, bear right and cross the bridge over the creek. The trail follows an old road to just below timberline. Above timberline the trail intersects the Pikes Peak Highway. Please follow the rock cairns above timberline to protect the fragile tundra. There are beautiful views in the distance of mountain ranges to the north, south and west of Pikes Peak.

About this trail's facts

The lines are the US Forest Service's National Forest System trails layer (public domain), read 2026-10-16 and simplified for the map; the length is the line's, end to end, and the class, surface, grade and tread width are the forest's own entries where it publishes them - a forest that publishes the centreline alone has none. The trailheads and the points along the way are the Service's recreation points, and the write-ups its own recarea text, unedited. Heights come from USGS 3DEP through Terrain Tiles on AWS (Mapzen/Tilezen), read along each line and rounded; a short trail on steep ground can be off by a few tens of feet. Closures change: check the forest's own site before you go.
